There’s a whole world of small-scale, local makers out there creating things for chicken keepers, and it’s easy to miss them if you’re only looking at the big feed store shelves. I’m talking hand-built nesting boxes, custom coop signs, herbal dust bath blends, treat mixes, that kind of thing. Buying from local makers means better quality, more of your money staying in the community, and usually someone who actually knows chickens on the other end of the sale.
In this post, I’ve rounded up some local sources for chicken-related goods, so you can support real people in our local communities instead of big corporations. I have included pricing for these products but please be aware that, while they are they are current as of June 2026, prices may change in the future.

Chicken Saddles
If you’ve never heard of a chicken saddle, it’s basically a little cape or jacket for your hen’s back meant to protect her feathers from damage from over-mounting by a rooster. Here are a few local sewists making saddles worth checking out.
Betty at Once Upon a Stitch
Betty makes chicken saddles for $6 each, or 2 for $10 (turkey saddles run a bit more, since they’re bigger). She makes them from whatever cute fabric she has on hand, so it’s always a bit of a surprise what might be available (that’s part of the fun though).

Allie at Fur N Feathers Farm Sanctuary
Allie’s chicken saddles are made of 100% breathable cotton material using an interface inside to prevent flip up while her turkey saddles are lined with interfacing and backed with jean material to add as much protection as possible. Turkey saddles use a button elastic to make putting on seamless.
Chicken saddles are $10 each or 3 for $25 or 4 for $32. Sizes range from bantams to large breeds. Turkey saddles are $15 each or 3 for $40 or $4 for $50

Once you’ve got eggs coming in, you’ll want a few things to help you clean, store, and show them off. Right now this section features a maker of egg scrubbies, but I’m on the hunt for more local egg-related finds, like handmade egg holders and stands.
