Where to Find Local, Handmade Chicken Goods

A roundup of local makers and small producers selling handmade goods for your flock.

Shop Local, Shop Small

There’s a whole world of small-scale, local makers out there creating things for chicken keepers, and it’s easy to miss them if you’re only looking at the big feed store shelves. I’m talking hand-built nesting boxes, custom coop signs, herbal dust bath blends, treat mixes, that kind of thing. Buying from local makers means better quality, more of your money staying in the community, and usually someone who actually knows chickens on the other end of the sale.

In this post, I’ve rounded up some local sources for chicken-related goods, so you can support real people in our local communities instead of big corporations. I have included pricing for these products but please be aware that, while they are they are current as of June 2026, prices may change in the future.

If you live in Nova Scotia and make a product for chickens, please reach out to be included in the list.

Chicken Saddles

If you’ve never heard of a chicken saddle, it’s basically a little cape or jacket for your hen’s back meant to protect her feathers from damage from over-mounting by a rooster. Here are a few local sewists making saddles worth checking out.

Betty at Once Upon a Stitch

Betty makes chicken saddles for $6 each, or 2 for $10 (turkey saddles run a bit more, since they’re bigger). She makes them from whatever cute fabric she has on hand, so it’s always a bit of a surprise what might be available (that’s part of the fun though).

📍 Pickup in Middle Sackville on Lucasville Road.

Allie at Fur N Feathers Farm Sanctuary

Allie’s chicken saddles are made of 100% breathable cotton material using an interface inside to prevent flip up while her turkey saddles are lined with interfacing and backed with jean material to add as much protection as possible. Turkey saddles use a button elastic to make putting on seamless.

Chicken saddles are $10 each or 3 for $25 or 4 for $32. Sizes range from bantams to large breeds. Turkey saddles are $15 each or 3 for $40 or $4 for $50

📍 Pickup in Three Mile Plains (near Windsor) or Cole Harbour.

All proceeds go back to Allie’s animals and special needs farm!

Egg Accessories

Once you’ve got eggs coming in, you’ll want a few things to help you clean, store, and show them off. Right now this section features a maker of egg scrubbies, but I’m on the hunt for more local egg-related finds, like handmade egg holders and stands.

Betty at Once Upon a Stitch

In addition to the chicken and turkey saddles listed above, Betty makes knitted egg scrubbies and they’re great for buffing off dirt and debris. Just the thing you didn’t know you needed!

They come in sets of 5 for just $3.

What Past Workshop Attendees Are Saying

Don't just take my word for it!

People leave with more than notes. They leave with the confidence to actually use what they learned, a guidebook they'll keep coming back to, and a clear sense of where to go locally for chicks, supplies, and everything else.

We moved to the local area and got chickens pretty quickly. Even though I had done a lot of researching and had already been keeping chickens a good while I learned so much! It was also beyond beneficial to have genuine local information on climate considerations, predators, suppliers, vets, community, etc. What you receive both in knowledge and thus confidence, the guidebook and materials, and also time spent with others doing the same thing, it really is an investment that gives you a lot more in return! Highly Recommend Feathered Fundamentals

What a great opportunity to learn from a knowledgeable, committed and generous leader. Krystal's preparation and guidebook are amazing. This course provides exceptional value, not only to those of us who participated, but also to the broader community, since we are better prepared to avoid mistakes, keep our birds healthy and help others do the same.

The workshop was awesome! The workbook is extensive, a great resource. But even more, Krystal's deep knowledge of chicken keeping and her willingness to share the her knowledge of the local chicken community, where to get everything from chicks, to supplies, and chicken care, really gave me a lot of confidence that I have the ability and resources now to care for my new flock.
